Jefferson Cup: Rite of Spring
March 26, 2018

Herndon Crush 04, shown above with Head Coach Tina Valente and Assistant Coach Bill Forcey, show off their gleaming hardware after winning their bracket at the highly competitive Jefferson Cup tournament.

The Jefferson Cup tournament is one of the oldest and most prestigious tournaments in the Mid-Atlantic region. Each Spring, hundreds of college soccer coaches converge on Richmond, VA, to observe competitive matches between teams that must apply to get in. The tournament accepts over 1,000 teams from around 36 states, but turns down an average of 500 teams per year. With an average of more than 150 State Cup Champions, over 10 Regional Champions and over five National Champions per year attending throughout the nine age groups, competition is fierce.

In 2018, teams coached by Total Futbol once again made their annual trek to participate in this spring preseason soccer ritual and came away with solid results. In the first weekend of girls competition (March 17-18, a Tournament for ages U10-U14), three Herndon Youth Soccer teams trained by Total Futbol coaches shone.

Herndon Lightning Black 06 were Finalists the GU12 Premier Orange bracket after posting two wins, one loss and one tie. They scored eight goals and conceded seven across the four games. Herndon Force 05 were Semi-Finalists in the GU13 Classic Orange bracket, scoring four goals and letting in two. And Herndon Crush 04 took the eight-team GU14 Premier Orange bracket by storm, going 4-0-0 and notching ten goals while conceding just four.

In the second weekend of competition (March 23-25, a College Showcase for ages U15-U19), two McLean Youth Soccer ECNL teams both coached by Total Futbol Executive Director Nadir Moumen, handily won the top bracket in their respective age groups. McLean 99/00G ECNL swept the 12-team GU19 Championship bracket with three wins, 11 goals for and four goals against. And McLean 02G ECNL went undefeated (2-0-1) the 12-team GU16 Championship bracket, winning their title after amassing ten goals and allowing four.
