Thunder Black and Storm Capture Annandale Tournament Titles
Vienna Thunder Black and Chantilly Storm each went undefeated at the Annandale Premier Cup to add another title to their resumes. Thunder Black’s bracket didn’t include a championship game, but the side won twice and added a tie to finish at the top of the standings. The Storm didn’t concede a goal the entire weekend and finished with nine of their own to capture the title in dominating fashion.
Vienna’s weekend began with a 2-0 win over Maryland Rush NPL. A solid start to the weekend, but their second match was against North Union United from Pennsylvania, who had also won their first game. With the teams tied on points entering the second match of three, whoever won was going to be in strong position to clinch the title.
Thunder Black were the aggressors throughout the match, and prevailed 3-1 to take a commanding lead in the standings as well as any potential head-to-head tiebreakers with North Union. The third and final match pitted the girls against familiar foes Reston United, still alive in the competition after winning their second match of the day on Saturday. Needing only a tie to outpace the rest of the field, Vienna settled for that result, with a 1-1 scoreline capturing the win.
Storm’s weekend began against Pipeline Black and the team scored twice in the second half to break the deadlock and get a positive result in the first game. The afternoon game versus Bethesda was sloppier, and despite maintaining a shutout, the team wasn’t able to capitalize on the other end and settled for a 0-0 draw.
Sunday morning’s group finale saw the championship berth still up in the air and the Storm knew they needed a strong result to put them in pole position. The team did just that, blanking TSC Cruzeiro 4-0. It was enough to get to the finals where they dispatched Vincent United Sirens from PA 3-0 to get another championship.
Congratulations to both teams on excellent weekends at the APC!
